Last year, some 35,000 children and adults with life threatening diseases could have benefited from a bone marrow transplant, blood stem cell or cord blood transplant. The AHEPA bone marrow donor registry was created over 20 years ago to help Greeks stricken
with cancer. Many times cancer stricken Greeks cannot find a bone marrow match, that is potentially lifesaving, among family members and relatives. Thus, Greek cancer patients must search for a match among other people of Greek heritage. People of Greek heritage are severely underrepresented in national and international bone marrow registries. The AHEPA bone marrow donor registry attempts to correct this imbalance and provide a chance to Greek cancer patients who are struggling for their lives. The AHEPA bone marrow donor registry could also assist others with bone marrow deficits like thalassemia or Cooley's anemia. The chances of finding
a match for a patient with an unrelated person are 20,000 to 1. We, as fellow Greeks, should add to the AHEPA bone marrow donor registry so that any Greek has a realistic chance of surviving. Becoming a prospective bone marrow donor is easy. Just click on the link for the AHEPA bone marrow donor registry. If you satisfy certain medical criteria, a simple mouth swab is all that it takes for you
to register in the AHEPA bone marrow donor registry.
